Mountain Village announces new Building Energy Incentive Program

Categories:

The Town of Mountain Village is pleased to announce the Building Energy Incentive Program, an innovative rebate program aimed at helping property owners reduce their buildings’ greenhouse gas emissions.

“Residential and commercial buildings make up about 90 percent of Mountain Village's emissions and this program is a critical step in helping reduce those emissions and moving Mountain Village towards our goal of carbon neutrality by 2050,” said Environmental Efficiencies and Grant Coordinator Lauren Kirn.

The Building Energy Incentive Program offers property owners rebates of up to $3,000 per year for residential homes and $5,000 per year for commercial properties, for performing energy audits and implementing at least one energy-efficiency upgrade resulting from the audit.

The rebate may not exceed 60 percent of the total project cost, and rebates are calculated after local utility rebates are factored in.

For example, if a commercial building implements an energy audit recommendation to upgrade the building's wall insulation, it may qualify for a $895 rebate from our local natural gas provider Black Hills Energy.

If the total cost of the project is $2,000, the building would qualify for a $305 rebate from the Town of Mountain Village (60 percent of $2,000 minus the $895 rebate from Black Hills Energy).

“This is a great time for property owners to leverage local utility rebates and federal tax credits in combination with our new incentive program to be rewarded for upgrading their homes or businesses to be more environmentally efficient,” Kirn added.

Rebate applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted and the project must be complete by December 31, 2023 to qualify. The Town has budgeted $50,000 for this incentive program.

If a property owner is submitting more than one project, the rebate applications can be submitted as each project is complete.

This program will be offered in alternating years with the Solar Energy Incentive Program to ensure the Town is maximizing its greenhouse gas emission reduction impact in a variety of avenues.
